Top 10 Habits for Super Effective Study

by Benjamin on September 26, 2009

We all want to learn new things quickly and easily…

I received a question the other day from Tanuj on the post At Last… Learn How To Build Concentration Right Now!

I am a student at a very crucial stage of my life..my future depends on the fact that how good marks i get this year…but sometimes i just feel like not studying even though i know how grave its consequences will be..so my search brought me to this page.. please help thank you

This is something every serious student faces at one point or another, no matter how intensely they study.

If you really are serious about what you want, then how could you avoid questioning your method of getting it?

(short of being a Zen master)

It is critical that you remember what you want… and more importantly why you want it… what really motivates you?

Are you getting good marks to please someone else, or do you want them for academic success and a shot at the career of your dreams?

Knowing your motivation (and returning to it frequently) is the first crucial key.

But assuming you know why you want it… and you feel really motivated… what are some practical habits for effective study and super learning?

focus, study, concentration Here’s the quick outline… be sure to watch the video for a more thorough explanation.

The Top 10 Habits for Super Effective Study!

(you’ll notice that I went beyond ten in this list… and I went beyond this list in the video… but ‘Top 10′ sounds better than ‘Top 13 or so’  :-) )

Highlighting/Note-taking Tips

This is very useful whether you are highlighting in a book while studying, taking notes during a lecture, or just studying to gain a deeper understanding of something that is important to you.

  1. Highlight important points (yours)
  2. Highlight important points (teachers)
  3. Highlight definitions
  4. Highlight lines that help you recall more information

Find something you love in every subject

This is Huge! This relates very closely with finding your motivation.  Pay attention to what you love about it… and connect with the thoughts and feelings around your motivations… preferably on a daily basis.

  1. Find something about the subject you like
  2. Find some research material that you enjoy
  3. Figure out what your instructor loves about it

General Principles

  1. Practice relaxation (critical for learning and test taking)
  2. Stagger in things that you love when you study
  3. Play with directing more and more focus into your study
  4. Notice how the images run in your mind when you really understand
  5. Notice the feelings in your body when you really understand
  6. Take time for study every day (avoid cramming)

I hope you find this helpful, Tanuj.

Hi Ben,

I agree that knowing your motivation why you study is key. This somehow needs to be linked to one of your passions in life. Why study if you are not motivated and do not like it?
