“Peace comes from within. Do not seek it without.”
-The Buddha
This is a video clip from a presentation by my good friend, Tamo (of ProjectGlobalAlchemy.com), called
Success Through Happiness!
It’s a little information on the life of the Buddha that is very pertinent to our time… and the backwards way in which most people try to achieve happiness…
The Story of The Buddha
All the material success in the world will never make us happy.
The search for happiness, should be directed within.

Worldly goods, a loving wife and “consorts” – still not enough for the buddha to be happy. Such a great reminder that happiness comes from connecting to love from the inside out. I’m sure many of us would “make do” with the buddha’s “before-life” while we’re figuring out how to make lasting happiness happen

Yes I’ve often thought I could find true happiness much easier if only I had the tender loving care of a few consorts…
And the Buddha is absolutely right about the whole ‘worldly attachments cause suffering’ thing… because if I had a few consorts, my wife would torture me to death… slowly.

A little bit more seriously, though I don’t think people necessarily have to make big changes in their lifestyle to begin to find true happiness… attachment to any part of it tends to make true happiness that much harder to experience.
The Story of the Buddha is humbling for me… he had way more in the way of worldly power, wealth, women, skill, etc. than I have ever seriously dreamed of having/experiencing. Yet in the midst of all that distraction, he recognized that not only was he not truly happy… he quickly relinquished all of it in order to set out on the path that led him to true happiness!
I’ll be doing a more extensive post on happiness within a day or so.
Thank you for your comment, Cheryl!

As Miester Eckhart says: “The primary cause of unhappiness is never the situation, but your thoughts about it.” When my perspective changes, my perception changes. When my perception changes, my experience changes. When my experience changes, my life changes. I was rather suprised that the fellow in the clip was aligning Posessions, talent, wealth, power, etc. with success. But then again, I suppose that’s a matter of perspective.
Hi Gary,
I haven’t read Miester Eckhart, yet… but what he is saying certainly seems to fall in line with what I have studied and what I endeavor to create in my life.
As far as the presentation of possession/wealth/power/etc. as success in the clip… this is based partially on my editing (it is from an hour long class), and what is typically seen as success.
There is a podcast of the whole class on the ‘sacred sounds’ page.
When listening to the whole thing it definitely comes across better that he’s talking about what ‘most people’ would call success.
The point as it seems to me… is to be happy. Once you’re truly happy, you will likely already see yourself as successful, and if you decide to create wealth, develop talent, get possessions, etc… you will now do it much more effectively.
