Finally… Master Meditation Right Now! (part 2)

by Benjamin on July 22, 2009

Last week, I wrote the first post in this series:

Finally… Master Meditation Now!

In it, I spoke about playing with the attitude of being already enlightened…

… and practicing meditation because that’s just what enlightened people do!

(Have you been doing the exercise from last week?  If so, excellent… you are already progressing very well… if not, no worries, go back to last week’s post, study it, and do the drill!)

This week, we will discuss and play with much more commonplace meditation advice… the importance of

Environment!

Where do I do it?

How do I build an atmosphere for subtle contemplation?

No book or site about meditation can pass over this topic.

I don’t see it as the huge concern that many seem to… but it is still quite worthy of comment.

If you haven’t already, I highly encourage you to designate a room in your house as your ‘meditation room’.  That doesn’t have to be it’s only purpose, but if you haven’t designated a specific place… it will be more challenging to appreciate it as a sacred space.

The classic advice is silence and stillness of the senses… this ultra-quiet environment can significantly speed up mastery of meditation:

Mastering Meditation

Just so you have a quick reference for what I discussed in the video:

1 Relax and defocus the eyes or simply close them.

What’s it like to see the silence?

2 Find a quiet space, or play soft, relaxing music.

Can you imagine hearing a palpable stillness?

3 Wear something comfortable and relaxing… and find a comfortable meditation position while maintaining upright posture…

Are you ready to touch the feelings of realization arising within…

These three are the primary concerns… these senses are where the vast majority of our neuron capacity is used… but it is also useful to pay attention to smell and taste.

4 Find a place free of odor, or burn some incense that you enjoy.

You may begin to notice subtle scents in environment… or subtle senses arising.

5 Brush your teeth or drink some water if it will help you to calm your taste buds.

Allow yourself to be so at peace, that you can taste your relaxation…

Now the really brilliant piece… is when you begin to blend the different drills together… so rather than asking the standard

What kind of clothes should I wear?

So you might ask yourself a much more powerful question…

How do I make my external environment reflect the Buddha I am awakening to within…

Your Master Meditation Now game for this week is to do exactly that!

  1. Ask yourself “How do I make my external environment reflect the Buddha I am awakening to within?” or “Just how magical can I make my meditation room?”
  2. And each day, find something to add to or remove from your meditation room to make the environment more peaceful and conducive to relaxation and contemplation
  3. and then spend some time in meditation… it can be as little as 5 minutes, or as long as you like.
  4. Be sure to start and finish your meditations with our statement of deep and powerful truth:  I am a Meditation Master!
  5. As always, be aware and accepting with whatever arises!

Make your room worthy of a true Buddha or a real Saint…

Engineer it to reflect the Highly Enlightened Master that you are!

keep smiling,

Ben

Instead of a room you can designate a chair or location. I find that using music can help to quiet the mind and like the crystal singing bowls to help facilitate that. (http://www.elivia.com)

Using a candle or rock salt lamp also casts a relaxing glow to the room–which also seem to be useful.
