How do you change the way you look at something?
In our life are events and circumstances. The meaning we apply to them can make them useful or problematic.
It happens all too often that our description of the events and/or circumstances of our lives suffer from Definition Deficiency. We define them in a way that sabotages our growth and learning…
When what we did not expect (or want) happens, it is often called ‘failure’. It is much more usefully described as ‘feedback’. ‘Failure’ leaves little room for growth from the given experience. ‘Feedback’ makes it a learning/growing experience by definition. Some take this a step further and say:
There is no failure, only feedback!
How many other processes in our lives suffer from similar definition deficiency?
How frequently do we fail to define things in a useful way?
More importantly, how do we begin to
find a constructive way to view your experience…
The best way to do this with the assistance of an excellent coach. However, here is a method you can use on your own:
- Take time during a deep relaxing meditation to examine some area in your life that has been challenging
- Just to start, see if there is any way of viewing the experience that will be more beneficial
- Now step into the shoes of a casual observer (someone who doesn’t care about your results one way or the other). Imagine what you would see, hear, and feel if you were them looking at you and your results…
- From their perspective, is there anything that is useful that you aren’t noticing? Is there any more constructive way of defining the circumstances?
- Now step into the shoes of someone who loves you deeply and only wishes you success. You can use your mother, or a truly benevolent/open-hearted trainer. If you are religious, you might even imagine your situation from the point of view of Christ, Buddha, etc. Imagine what you would see, hear, and feel if you were them looking at your results…
- Now from this perspective, is there anything that is useful that you aren’t noticing? Is there any more constructive way of defining the circumstances?
- When you are finished with your meditation, affirm “Every day, in every way, I’m getting better, better, and better!“
Depending on the severity of the challenge, you might want to perform this exercise once a week, or you might do a short version several times a day.
When you take time to generate a better definition… a more useful perspective… your entire experience of life will begin to beautifully transform!
keep smiling,
ben
