Daily Meditation – Automaticity (4-29-10)

“Everything is happening of its own; nothing is causing anything else.”

-Dr. David R Hawkins

This is a challenging one.

The notion of causality is a basic building block for virtually all of what we perceive to be ‘life’.

But do we really cause anything?

Did we even cause ourselves to be here?

Ultimately the circumstances of life keep arising automatically whether we choose to take credit for it or not.

Dr Hawkins likes to use the term “Automaticity”.

For example, a flower automatically blooms:

flower, bloom

We can plant the seeds… but there is no forcing nature to unfold.

So how exactly is this concept/recognition useful?

One of the biggest challenges of the Mystic path is recognizing the ultimate unity… the truth of Energy Oneness… which is only possible by the progressive release of positionalities… one of the most common being the assumption that ‘this’ caused ‘that’ (or ‘I’ caused ‘that’)… this is the birth of duality.

When we begin to recognize Automaticity in all our affairs… once we start to notice that everything arises spontaneously of its own… we can really let go of those positionalities… the duality begins to disappear!

Daily Meditation – Automaticity

(4-29-10)

There is no ‘this’ causing a ‘that’

Formal Practice: Start with a few deep breaths and allow the possibility that everything around you is arising spontaneously to enter your mind.  Parts of you will usually jump up to say something to the effect of “No, it doesn’t happen that way…”.  That’s okay.  They are arising spontaneously as well.  Allow all mental and physical processes to spontaneously arise of their own.  Continue to relax and breath… and rest here as long as you like.

Informal Practice: Recognize this process in your daily life.  Notice the part of you that wants to take credit for everything.  Then remember the universe had to be here for there to be a solar system.  The solar system had to be here for there to be a planet.  The planet had to be here for the human race to be here.  The human race had to be here for your great, great grandparents to be here.  And they had to be here for you to be here.  How many other countless possibilities had to go a certain way for you to even exist?  And without your existence, you could have taken no action.  Whether it is as simple as pouring a cup of coffee, or as complex as ‘being a productive member of society’… there is no way to take personal credit for all that happened to allow the possibility of perceiving everything to be ‘my work’ or ‘my choice’ or ‘something I did’.

Again, this one is challenging!

If you are like most people, you have never seriously questioned whether it is a personal you that is really responsible for all that you appear to do throughout your life.

Ultimately, we are just like the flower… we are a spontaneous unfolding of the beauty of life…

Slowly allow the concept of automaticity to arise as you go about your day… in formal meditation and more informal contemplation.

Notice how it all arises spontaneously of its own…

keep smiling,

Benjamin
